Student Story: Stephen Rennie - Uniformed Services

Meet Stephen Rennie, Uniformed Services student, whose College experience is helping him to develop new interests and pursue his goal of joining the police.

Tell us a bit about yourself and why you came to D&A?

"I was leaving high school, and I knew that I wanted to get into the police, so I applied to College to further progress my studies and gain the skills I needed to do that. Getting into the police is something that I have always wanted to do, and this course was a pathway to let me do that. I had the qualifications to get into the police, but I felt that I did not have the experiences required to showcase in my application. I knew that the Uniformed Services course has a wide range of activities and learning opportunities that would allow me to highlight during the application and interview process."

What have you got going on outside of College?

"I do not have a lot going on outside of College, although I do enjoy going to the gym. I go to the gym more now as I have developed a lot of skills and understanding of fitness through taking on the Uniformed Services course. I also have a part-time job that I have just started and that keeps me busy too."

How do you balance coming to College with your personal interests and home life?

"It’s quite easy to balance College with other things due to the timetabling of the course and the hours that you are in class for full-time study, it is easy to work them around working or other activities.  Full-time is only two and a half days a week, so it is simple to manage your time around gaining further education."

What are the highlights of your College journey so far?

"The highlights of coming to College have been all of the experiences that I have had as part of the course, things that I have not done before or would have gotten the chance to do if I had not enrolled on the course.  I have also been very fortunate to have made a lot of friends on the course."

What’s next for you, what are your goals?

"I am not too sure what is next for me but now that I have been to College I can see that there are a lot more options available at D&A.  I am nearing the end of my course, and I am now looking into other courses that will give me more qualifications and further experiences before looking into joining the police. There is so much to choose from so I am sure that I will find something to do!"
